Here are examples of the sounds that we record at our acoustic monitoring sites in the western Canadian Arctic, including sounds from beluga whales, bowhead whales, ringed seals, bearded seals, fish (likely Arctic Cod, Boreogadus saida), ice sounds during a storm, and ships and small boats.
Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)
Bowhead Whale (Balaena mysticetus)
Bearded Seal (Erignathus barbatus)
Ringed Seal (Pusa hispida)
We recently published a paper on the vocal repertoire of ringed seals based on data recorded in May 2022 near Ulukhaktok, NT. We identified 3 call types: barks, yelps, and growls, and also noticed that barks and yelps are often produced in sequences. The spectrograms and sounds below are from this new paper: Barbosa M, Halliday WD, Insley SJ, Dosso SE (2024) Characterization of the ringed seal (Pusa hispida) acoustic repertoire during spring in the Western Canadian Arctic. Bioacoustics 33: 433–447. https://doi.org/10.1080/09524622.2024.2381738
We have recorded many ringed seals sounds over the years, and they allow fit the repertoire described above. Here are more examples of ringed seal calls.
